Alexis Sanchez will start scoring soon, Arsene Wenger says

Arsene Wenger says he has no doubt Alexis Sanchez will rediscover his goalscoring form soon.

Sanchez finished his first season at Arsenal with 25 goals, but he began pre-season training late after this summer's Copa America is yet to find the net in eight appearances this term.

The Chilean's form mirrors that of Arsenal, who have had the most shots of any Premier League side while scoring just five times in six games.

That is their worst record at the start of a season since 1986, but ahead of Saturday's game at unbeaten Leicester Wenger appeared unconcerned by Sanchez's drought.

"I think I played him very early before he was completely fit, physically, that is one explanation," he said.

"The second is that every player who has won a big trophy with the national team takes some while to settle and come back to his best. These are the two main explanations for me.

"Physically he is not completely ready, coming out of a big achievement and that takes time. I don't worry for Alexis Sanchez. Even when he doesn't score he is still a major threat for everybody and I am confident he will score very soon."

Wenger was satisfied with the contributions of the players he brought in from the game, not least Mathieu Flamini, who scored both his side's goals in a 2-1 win.

"It shows we have a strong squad," said Wenger, who again offered Arsenal's assistance with a police investigation into disturbances in the away end at Tottenham. "I have great confidence in these players.

"Flamini has shown what a character he is. He has used his frustration in a positive way."

Flamini could keep his place at Leicester given Francis Coquelin is again missing with a knee injury, and Wenger feels fit-again Mathieu Debuchy is ready to fight Hector Bellerin for the right-back role.

Debuchy's performance at White Hart Lane was criticised by some Arsenal supporters, but the manager said: "He is coming back to best. He is mentally very strong and committed to compete with Bellerin."

Arsene Wenger is hopeful Gabriel's will not face any punishment for his behaviour after being sent off against Chelsea

Gabriel's participation this weekend remains in doubt as he awaits the verdict on a Football Association charge of improper conduct.

The Brazilian's red card at Chelsea was rescinded earlier in the week, but he could yet be banned for failing to leave the pitch quietly at Stamford Bridge.

"He was sorry about what had happened," Wenger said. "He is a fighter. In training he was completely focused."
