Ronald Koeman said Southampton did not play well enough to beat Liverpool, but was pleased they came from behind to earn a point.
Saints looked to be heading for their first away defeat of the season after Christian Benteke came off the bench to give the hosts the lead on 77 minutes.
But Saido Mane bundled in a late equaliser to secure a point for the visitors before getting sent off in injury time at Anfield.
"I don't think we played to the level we normally do," Saints boss Koeman told Sky Sports. "It was not good enough to win today, but if you are 1-0 down with 13 minutes to go and you take a point you can be very happy.
"It wasn't the performance we wanted but we showed good mentality and spirit. It was a fair result."
Saints had beaten Premier League champions Chelsea in their last away game and Koeman was disappointed his side did not create enough chances to triumph at Anfield.
"We had to create more and we didn't," he said. "You always want more but to get more you have to play at your level and we didn't."
The draw stretches Southampton's unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions and sees them move up to eighth in the table.
Asked whether they can challenge for the top four this season, Koeman said: "That is difficult,
"Maybe now we can be strong against them (top-four teams) but over the whole season it's different.
"However, we have not lost away yet and that's very positive."
