Xherdan Shaqiri looks set to miss out on Stoke City's squad for their second round EFL Cup tie against Stevenage.

The Switzerland international was left out of the side that lost 4-1 to Manchester City on Saturday after sustaining an ankle injury in pre-season and is expected to be rested for the cup tie against their Sky Bet League Two opposition.

Shaqiri managed to rescue a point for Stoke in their 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign, and it is hoped the 24-year-old will be back to face Everton on Saturday - though Jack Butland (ankle), Glen Johnson (quadriceps), Stephen Ireland (broken leg) and Ibrahim Afellay (knee) remain out.

Stoke are therefore set to take an unchanged squad to the Lamex Stadium on Tuesday, though Mark Hughes is likely to make a number of changes to the starting line-up after the defeat to Pep Guardiola's City.

Marc Muniesa, Geoff Cameron, Charlie Adam, Jonathan Walters and Peter Crouch are all expected to be involved after they began on the bench at the weekend.
