Jose Mourinho says Manchester United winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan still has work to do to force his way back into the team.

Mkhitaryan has endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford following his summer move from Borussia Dortmund, with a thigh injury restricting him to just five appearances.

He has not featured for United since the 2-1 derby defeat to Manchester City on September 10 and watched on from the directors' box on Thursday as his team-mates claimed a 4-1 victory over Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

Mkhitaryan returned to training three weeks ago, and though declared fit by Mourinho prior to kick-off against the Turkish side, has since been told he must build up his match fitness and wait for his chance.

Mourinho said: "The situation is that we played with [Jesse] Lingard, with [Juan] Mata and [Anthony]Martial.

"I am not an Einstein. I don't know a tactical system that can play with four wingers at the same time.

"He has to work more to get the intensity and fitness to play at a high level. To have him on the bench and give him 15 or 20 minutes like I did to Memphis [Depay], I think it is much better for him to work and wait for his chance, but he is ready very soon."
