Claude Puel says he was delighted with Josh Sims' debut for Southampton

Southampton manager Claude Puel praised the performance of Josh Sims, who made his first start in the 1-0 win over Everton on Super Sunday.

The 19-year-old midfielder was handed his debut for the Saints - something he only found out prior to the match - and turned in a man-of-the-match display, including an assist for Charlie Austin to score the winner after just 41 seconds.

"For a first game in Premier League, it wasn't bad! He is a player of the academy and he's made good progress. He has qualities, good spirit and good work," said Puel.

"For me, it is important to respect this philosophy. It is important for Southampton to develop its young players."

It was a first win in five Premier League games for Southampton, who bounced back well following their 1-0 Europa League defeat to Sparta Prague in midweek and moved up to 10th in the table.

"It was a strong start which was important for confidence. It was pleasing seeing my players play with quality and spirit. It was a good answer from the players because we had a lot problems before the game," the Saints boss said.
