Willy Caballero is hoping to benefit from Claudio Bravo's injury lay-off as he seeks to earn a new contract at Manchester City.

The club's second-choice goalkeeper is out of contract this summer and is hoping to impress manager Pep Guardiola during their three remaining league fixtures while Bravo recovers from a calf injury.

Asked if he wanted to stay at the Etihad the 35-year-old, who joined City in 2014, said: "Yes, of course. It's an amazing team and club with fantastic players, so I think every player wants to stay in my position.

"It depends on a lot of things but the most important thing for me is to do my best."

City's options in goal have raised questions this season, with Bravo making some costly errors after Guardiola signed the Chilean as a replacement for England No 1 Joe Hart, who has spent the season on loan at Serie A side Torino.

Following some less than assured performances in goal, Bravo was dropped in favour of Caballero for City's trip to West Ham at the beginning of February - a match which ended with a comfortable 4-0 win for Guardiola's men.

But Bravo was restored to the starting XI for the 3-1 win over Hull on April 8. However, just when it seemed Caballero would spend the rest of the term on the bench, Bravo was stretchered off during the Manchester derby.

"I have my opportunity to play now and to try to show what I can do and how I can help the team," Caballero continued.

"I have to keep going and after we will speak with the club and my agent."

City, who currently occupy fourth in the table, will look to end the season strongly to ensure Champions League qualification and Caballero is relishing the challenge.

"I have been focused in the last eight months since Pep arrived here and I have been professional from the first day," he added.

"Now I have an opportunity to play and a big opportunity to be in goal and try to qualify this club, after that we see what happens.

"Unfortunately he probably can't play until next season but I trained really hard for this opportunity and I am not focused on Claudio and me - it's the team."
