Louis van Gaal is right to consider playing Marouane Fellaini as a striker, according to Carlisle United manager Keith Curle.

Van Gaal's side have struggled in front of goal so far this season, scoring just twice in three Premier League games, but Curle believes the Belgian has the potential to be a success up front at Old Trafford.

"He's definitely a player that, on his day, is unplayable with his size, athleticism and ability to hold the ball," said the Cumbrians manager.

"He's got a willingness to arrive in the box and he's a big strong lad. He's probably more gifted on the ground and his finishing ability than people give him credit for.

"During his time spent at Everton he had to do a lot of work for the team. I think he's had a settling in period now at Manchester United and I think it's time now for him to bring goals into his game."

Curle's side overcame the odds on Tuesday night to record an impressive 2-1 victory away at QPR in the Capital One Cup second round.

"We've been in a relegation fight for the last two seasons and there's been a cloud over the football club," said former England defender Curle.

"There's an opportunity now for light at the end of the tunnel. It shows that the club is going in the right direction.

"When we got the draw at Liverpool it was fantastic. There are a lot of people here who are going to get the rewards they deserve but ultimately, the first thing I was doing after last night's victory was picking a team for Saturday [away at Hartlepool]."
