Everton's Steven Naismith describes Chelsea hat-trick in his own words

Not many players score a hat-trick against the Premier League champions. Even fewer do it coming off the bench.

But that's exactly what Steven Naismith achieved last weekend when he managed a perfect treble - left foot, right foot and header - in Everton's 3-1 victory over Chelsea.

The forward, who came on for the injured Muhamed Besic in the ninth minute, became only the sixth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick off the bench and talked Soccer Saturday through a game he will never forget.

Before

You're disappointed [not to play], but you've got to be ready and you've got to support the team. I think the boys who started the season have done pretty well and they could argue they deserved to start over someone like myself who probably hasn't played as much. That's the way football is, but it can change so much. By the end of the day it was a perfect day for me. Something I've learned over the years is how quickly subs can be made. Some players don't have their boots tied or shin guards on, but I get everything ready and it means at times like Saturday when you're called upon you can be ready in 10 seconds, rather than five minutes.

We had good possession in their half and when Gareth Barry and Ross Barkley get on the ball their first instincts are always to look forward. I just tried to get in the pocket between the midfield and defence and when I did I found a bit of space. Brendan Galloway made a great overlapping run and it was just a case of a race to get in the box and get in the end of it. It was a perfect ball in and made the header much easier than it could have been.

It was another good move. We went from one side to the other and Ross played me the ball. My first touch was good and I noticed I had a bit of room and thought there was no point trying to take them on and giving them time to get back, it was about the instinct of hitting it and it was a good strike. In training we do a lot of different types of finishing and that probably gave me the confidence to go ahead and do that.

The third one was probably the most satisfying because it was a hat-trick. You think you've won the game from then. When I look back, the move was fantastic and again we went from one side of the pitch to the other. Ross started it with a free-kick, played a couple of one-twos with myself and there was some fantastic one-touch passing. Again Ross played a fantastic ball for me to finish and that's something Ross has improved on from last season when he probably would have tried to take John Terry on himself and maybe got a shot or lost the ball. Now he's making the right decisions - thankfully for me - and I managed to put it under the goalie for a nice hat-trick.

In the few seconds afterwards my team-mates were all running towards me with delight on their faces. That was probably the most pleasing thing for me. My team-mates were genuinely happy for me - there was a lot of great emotion for me to take in. After the game you start thinking about it - and it was against the champions who won the league at a canter last season and who are a world-class team. It's something I'll definitely look back on with fond memories.
