As 2016 draws to a close, the Sky Sports pundits have revealed their big hopes for football in 2017.

We asked the likes of Jamie Carragher, Phil Thompson, Jamie Redknapp and Charlie Nicholas for their thoughts.

Watch the video above and read on to find what they hope to see in the New Year...

Phil Thompson

"The hope upon all hopes is that Liverpool can get that monkey off our backs and win the Premier League title. I know it's a massive hope and it's a difficult one, but at this moment we're playing some great stuff.

"We've got as good a chance as any, we've got a better chance than most. I hope that Jurgen Klopp, the staff, the players and everybody can do it. It's fantastic to be a Liverpool fan at the moment. There's a long way to go, but if they can pull it off I will be absolutely delighted."

Paul Merson

"That my boy gets a break in football!"

Jamie Carragher

"I hope to see Liverpool lift the Premier League, I must say. I think they will be contention. I think it will be a great end to the Premier League season.

"I also hope there's more than two teams involved at the end of the season. It normally narrows itself down to two, I think history tells you that, but I think it would be fantastic if we had three or four teams in it. Hopefully we will be looking at different games and head-to-head where wins and losses are absolutely vital."

Don Goodman

"My big hope for football in 2017 is that supporters continue to be entertained. We always get a fantastic race in the Championship because of the nature of what it is, but right across the Football League. The Premier League is hopefully set up and primed to have the most unpredictable battle we've had for a very, very long time."

Jamie Redknapp

"People are going to say it's obvious that I would say this, but I'm looking at it from a romantic point of view and a football point of view: I would love to see Liverpool win the league.

"It's been a long time, they've had their punishment. I think it would be a great story for all the neutrals to see Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool win it again."

Martin Tyler

"My football wish for 2017 is that it's even better than 2016, which has been incredible, because the Leicester City fairy story will last forever and a day. If we can top that in 2017, it will be some year."

Niall Quinn

"I hope my national team, Ireland, make it to the World Cup under Martin O'Neill. An interesting few months coming up there."

Alan Smith

"In 2017 I hope we get less of that really aggressive back-chat to the refs. The cameras see it and the kids at home see it and they take that out to the park when they play on a Sunday morning."
