Victor Valdes' agent says the goalkeeper will leave Manchester United in January and is unlikely to return to Spain.

The former Barcelona shotstopper has been frozen out at Old Trafford after Louis van Gaal said he refused to play for the reserves.

He has not played for United since coming on a substitute in the final game of last season and has been linked with a number of clubs, including Newcastle, who lost their first-choice keeper Tim Krul to a season-ending injury this week.

Valdes' agent, Gines Carvajal, revealed the 33-year-old will look to leave in the next transfer window but did not say where he will be going.

"He needs to go to a place he feels is right for him," he told Radio Marca. "He won't be coming to Spain, unless he decides otherwise.

"It is obvious he must leave in January and and we will try to make sure he's happy and feels comfortable [with the move]."

Carvajal also revealed that the ex-Barcelona keeper turned down the chance to return to La Liga in the last window.
