Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says full-back Matteo Darmian and centre-half Chris Smalling are both doubtful for Saturday's Premier League clash at Bournemouth.

United can ill-afford further defensive injuries as they are already without Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw, plus Antonio Valencia, who can play at full-back.

However, Darmian had to be taken off just before half-time during Tuesday night's 3-2 Champions League defeat at Wolfsburg and will have to be assessed on Wednesday.

Smalling managed to make it to full-time in Germany but was apparently struggling with a groin problem towards the end, by which time United had used all three of their substitutions.

And the club tweeted after the match: "Louis van Gaal says Darmian has a hamstring injury and Smalling probably a groin problem, with both doubtful to face Bournemouth on Saturday."

United were forced to replace Darmian, who lined up at left-back, with the 18-year-old youngster Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, the 22-year-old right-back Guillermo Varela having been given a full debut on the other defensive flank.
