Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will miss Sunday's trip to Everton after being booked in Wednesday night's EFL Cup win over West Ham.

Rooney was shown his fifth yellow of the season after reacting angrily to being punished for a foul on Edimilson Fernandes, referee Mike Jones brandishing a card for dissent in the 53rd minute.

The incident means Rooney will miss the chance to equal Sir Bobby Charlton's club goalscoring record at the club where he started his career.

Charlton was at Old Trafford to watch United's convincing 4-1 win but while Rooney helped craft Zlatan Ibrahimovic's opener with a smart through-ball the closest he came to pulling level with his legendary onlooker's 249-goal haul was in the 15th minute with a free-kick that Adrian pushed wide.
