Manchester United have activated a clause in Marouane Fellaini's contract which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2018.

The 29-year-old midfielder joined United from Everton in 2013 on a four-year deal, with an option for a further year.

And Fellaini will be staying at the club for a fifth season, despite enduring indifferent spells since he was signed for £27.5m by David Moyes.

Marouane Fellaini headed straight for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho following his goal

Fellaini found himself booed by his own supporters against Tottenham, having given away a late penalty a week earlier against his former club Everton which allowed the Blues to salvage a draw at Goodison Park.

But the United supporters were back on his side on Tuesday night, as Fellaini came off the bench to score what may prove a crucial second goal in the 2-0 EFL Cup semi-final first leg win over Hull.

Fellaini celebrated the goal with manager Jose Mourinho, who has kept faith with the Belgium international and said after the game: "He has a very strong mentality. He coped well with the situation and he was not afraid in the next match after Everton to go on to the pitch again.

"I think he played phenomenally against Reading [last weekend] and [against Hull] he scored an important goal for us.
