Sky sources understand Manchester United are interested in signing Antoine Griezmann, should he become available in the summer.
However, the Atletico Madrid striker is not seen as a potential deal for United during this transfer window.
Griezmann said back in November he did not see himself moving to a new club but added he would like to play club football with Paul Pogba - United's record signing - at some point in the future.
It is understood the 25-year-old is the right age and fits the profile United are looking for and, if a deal can be done, they will look to make the France international the next stellar name to make the move to Old Trafford.
United signed Pogba for a world record fee of almost £90m last summer, as well as spending £30m on defender Eric Bailly and £26.3m on Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone faced questions on Griezmann's future on Wednesday, and is unsurprised by the wealth of interest.
"I don't tie anyone down, I simply keep working to continue getting better for the sake of the club," he said, as quoted by AS.
"He is in an extraordinary moment, is working well, has gotten back on the scoresheet and his form is good. It is normal that the best teams in the world want him. I am not surprised that the teams who are looking are the ones who can afford him."
