Chris Smalling has given an update on his recovery from injury on Instagram as he aims for a swift Manchester United return

Chris Smalling has stepped up his recovery from injury as he aims to return for Manchester United before the end of the season.

The 27-year-old defender was ruled out until "mid-May" by United manager Jose Mourinho last week after sustaining a leg problem while on England duty in March.

If that proves to be the case, Smalling will miss the remainder of the club's Premier League campaign, but could return in time for the Europa League final on May 24 if United make it.

However, the centre-back has raised hopes he could come back ahead of schedule though after posting a video of himself running freely without his leg brace in a swimming pool.

Jose Mourinho said he only wants players who put "bodies on the line"

"Good day at the office and nice to finally be out of the brace. Running on reduced weight to help strengthen the leg," wrote Smalling on social media.

United have conceded just one Premier League goal in the four games since Smalling last played, a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough in March, with Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo forming a formidable partnership.
