Jose Mourinho insisted his side had played well despite another below-par showing in their stalemate at West Ham.
Mourinho's side created the better chances, but never enough to truly worry Adrian in the West Ham net.
And while he said United had been the ones pushing for three points at the London Stadium, he admitted having the point the club needed to secure second spot in the Premier League became a factor as the game wore on.
He said: "We showed clearly we were playing to win the match. We had the best chances, I believe, Adrian made a few saves and in the first half we had a double one.
"Obviously, when you know you need a point to finish second, and the game gets to 70-75 minutes, you have a point in your hand, you are not going to gamble to try to win, because you know a point is what you need for second position."
Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay were both handed starts in the run-up to the FA Cup final, which will follow Sunday's Premier League finale against Watford on Sunday.
Mourinho denied the idea the game served as an audition for the pair, but was happy with how they had played in the draw.
He added: "We played well, and the important thing is not that it was an exam, it was an opportunity to play and they were part of a very positive performance."
