Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he will not directly replace his assistant Rui Faria, who announced on Saturday he is leaving the club.

Faria has been by Mourinho's side at various clubs for over 17 years but will leaving after next Saturday's FA Cup final.

Asked after Sunday's 1-0 win over Watford whether he would be replacing Faria, Mourinho said: "No.

"I will organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn't exist.

"I'm going to have assistant coaches, I'm going to have fitness coaches, and a structure where they have specialists in different areas connected to the performance. I'm not going to have an assistant managing in the sense of the word."

Michael Carrick played his final game on Sunday and will now join the coaching staff full-time and Mourinho says the midfielder could become his assistant at some point.

"I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future, when he has his badges, his pro licence, when he makes the bridge between a player to an assistant," said Mourinho.

"I have nobody in the world of football ready to be my assistant manager, so I prefer to educate people and to structure my staff in a way where there is education and improvement.

"And when Michael has the pro licence badges, normally with the personality, friendship and honesty he has, I think it will be for him.

"But I'm going to improve my staff in the performance level and, in relation to the tactical work, I'm going to bring some people that, until this moment, have not come with me yet."
