Laporta elected

JOAN LAPORTA`S posturing regarding signing David Beckham appeared to be the pivotal factor as he beat off competition from Lluis Bassat to win the Barcelona presidential elections.

Laporta sprung from the shadows to claim that he had struck a deal with Manchester United to sign Beckham if he won the elections.

His campaign gathered support as the talk of Beckham increased, with early favourite Bassat falling away in the polls.

Laporta was confident ahead of the voting and his faith was not misplaced as he beat off competition from Bassat to clinch a landslide victory on Sunday evening.

Laporta received 52.6 percent, with nearest rival Bassat taking 31.8% of the 51,520 votes polled - a record turnout for an election.

The Camp Nou faithful will now look for Laporta to make good his promise and bring Beckham to Catalunya.

The England captain has remained tight lipped on the subject of his future, but his management company said last week that they had no intention of talking to Laporta.

It would seem that Laporta has a lot of negotiating to do if he is to sign Beckham, with bitter rivals Real Madrid waiting in the wings to swoop, but he emerged from the wilderness to claim victory and is not short of confidence.

The talk centring on Beckham certainly helped catapult Laporta from obscurity to presidency, and many may well see it as a failure if the Manchester United man snubs the Catalans.

However, the voters have clearly been impressed by Laporta`s energy and the ideas he has put forward to revive Barca`s fortunes.
