David de Gea left out of Manchester United squad to face Club Brugge

Manchester United have omitted goalkeeper David de Gea from their squad for Wednesday's Champions League play-off clash with Club Brugge.

Sergio Romero, who has started all of United's games so far this season, and Sam Johnstone are the two goalkeepers to feature in the squad for the second leg in Belgium.

United are aiming to protect their 3-1 lead from the first leg and book their place in the group stages.

De Gea has yet to play for United this season and this latest omission is likely to fuel speculation that he is about to join Real Madrid.

However, United manager Louis van Gaal insisted at the weekend that the 24-year-old would not be sold in the current transfer window, saying he is not currently selecting De Gea because the Spaniard is unable to focus properly due to Real's interest.

The Dutchman said: "I think when Manchester United wants a player he shall come, besides when a club is not selling. It is the same with us. We are not selling De Gea."

United squad: Romero, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Mata, Januzaj, Memphis, Rooney, Johnstone, McNair, Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Young, Hernandez.
