Wayne Rooney says it is incredible to become England's leading goalscorer and insists he will never forget such a special night

Steve Round says new England goalscoring record holder Wayne Rooney is "up there with the best in European football".

And Round, who worked with Rooney while assistant to David Moyes at Manchester United, believes England can end their 50-year wait for a title at next year's European Championship in France.

On Tuesday, Rooney replaced Sir Bobby Charlton atop the England rankings when slotting home from the penalty spot six minutes from time against Switzerland at Wembley.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Round said: "Whenever you look at a centre forward there are a few different criteria.

"Is he physically able to cope in the league he is playing in? Can he take the hits off the big defenders?

"Wayne is physically excellent, a bull of a lad. He still has enough speed, he gets into great positions and his technical and tactical work is up there with the best in European football.

"He still has a long way to go and can extend that record. But I think really to be judged as a great player and be up there with Sir Bobby, he's got to lead England to victory in a tournament.

"England have a great chance next year. They have a good young emerging team, playing some great football.

"They are playing without fear and going into a tournament where nobody really stands out. So I think England have as good a chance as any."
