Wayne Rooney could miss Manchester United's game against Liverpool on Saturday, which could lead to a debut for Anthony Martial.

According to a report in the Manchester Evening News, Rooney has suffered a hamstring injury and will be unavailable for the game at Old Trafford, which is live on Sky Sports 1HD from 5pm.

The report states that Rooney hurt his hamstring in the final day of preparations at United's Carrington training ground, and was not with the squad at their team hotel and is a doubt for the Champions League tie at PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

If Rooney is not available, it would leave a space available in the United forward line for Martial, for whom the Red Devils paid Monaco an initial fee of £36m on transfer deadline day.

Marouane Fellaini, who has been used as a striker on several previous occasions by Louis van Gaal, would also be an option to start in attack, while James Wilson - who is being pursued by several clubs as a loan signing - would also be in the frame.
