Hector Moreno insists that his tackle which broke the right leg of Manchester United's Luke Shaw was an "accident" and says he feels "really sorry" for the defender.

United's Champions League campaign was just 24 minutes old on Tuesday night when PSV Eindhoven defender Moreno slid into Shaw and snapped his leg in two places.

Shaw may not play again this season which would also be a setback for England manager Roy Hodgson ahead of next summer's Euro 2016 finals in France.

Moreno has also suffered a broken leg during his career, which happened at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil when playing for Mexico against the Netherlands who, incidentally, were coached at the time by Louis van Gaal.

United manager van Gaal was unhappy with the Mexican's challenge on Shaw but Moreno says he did not intend to cause any injury.

Moreno said: "I don't know what happened, I don't remember. I just feel really bad because I was involved in the accident. I feel really sorry.

"I played the ball but in this kind of situation, I don't care if it was a foul. I feel bad for him, for his family.

"I don't know how bad it is. I had that situation myself during the World Cup and it's bad.

"It's difficult to say what happened. Now I just hope he will be back as soon as possible."

Moreno went on to score the opener as PSV kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 triumph over United in Eindhoven.
