Chelsea have handed a trial to unattached Italian goalkeeper Marco Amelia, Sky sources understand.
It is understood Blues manager Jose Mourinho is keen to have another goalkeeper as back up to Asmir Begovic, who is the only experienced goalkeeper in the squad that is currently fit to play.
First-choice Thibault Courtois is out until December with an injury while Jamal Blackman, who has deputised on the bench, is 21 and has never made an appearance for Chelsea.
Mourinho had been reportedly interested in a move for Porto's 37-year-old keeper Helton, but ruled out a move ahead of their Champions League defeat to the Portuguese champions on Tuesday.
Mourinho said: "Helton has a contract with Porto and would only be available in January. We need a goalkeeper now, not in January when Courtois will be available."
Amelia was released by AC Milan in the summer of 2014 and has not landed a long-term contract since.
He had a short term deal with Perugia at the end of last season but never made a first-team appearance. He will now train with Chelsea with the view to a contract.
