Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness agree that David Luiz will not be a first-choice centre-back at Chelsea.

Jordan Henderson scored a goal-of-the-season contender as Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 on Friday Night Football at Stamford Bridge in what was Luiz's second debut for the club.

The Brazil international joined Chelsea on Deadline Day from Paris Saint-Germain for £30million and was brought into the fold against the Reds as a replacement for John Terry, who suffered ankle ligament damage against Swansea.

The Chelsea defence went to sleep for the opening goal when Dejan Lovren was given far too much room at the back post before firing his team in front.

Although Luiz wasn't directly at fault for the first goal, Souness and Carragher agreed that Chelsea would have defended the cross with more authority if Terry had been playing.

Antonio Conte says his side must defend better and learn quickly if they're to avoid a repeat of last season

"If John Terry played tonight, Chelsea wouldn't have conceded that first goal," Souness said. "Someone who can organise would have stopped that goal.

"David Luiz did nothing wrong but the most important thing for central defenders is stopping efforts on your goal."

Carragher went on to add that Luiz will struggle to break in to the Chelsea first-team if both Gary Cahill and Terry are fit, and suggested the former PSG defender's expansive style doesn't mark him out as an Antonio Conte player.

David Luiz says Chelsea were not good enough in the first half but vowed to improve

"It will be Terry and Gary Cahill - it's tried and trusted," said Carragher. "Chelsea are a type of club where the club actually sign players - the manager gets changed so often it's almost like a European model.

"If Antonio Conte had wanted David Luiz he would've got him much earlier. He's not a Conte centre-back. He's had out and out defenders at Italy and Juventus - their main job is to defend and Luiz isn't that type of player."
