John Aldridge expects Liverpool to appoint a new manager within a week and would like Carlo Ancelotti to succeed Brendan Rodgers.

Jurgen Klopp is the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Rodgers', who was sacked following the 1-1 Merseyside derby draw on Sunday - a result that left the Reds with just one win in their last nine games.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, former Liverpool striker Aldridge said: "I think Liverpool must have done their homework on this. You can't just sack a manager without knowing who you are going to employ."

Liverpool don't play again until a trip to Tottenham on October 17 and are keen to install their new man quickly, with no desire to appoint an interim boss.

"They've got two weeks' saving grace and I'm sure they've made one or two little phone calls," added Aldridge.

"I'd be very surprised if someone isn't installed in the next four to seven days. Personally, I would like Ancelotti. His background goes before him."

However, Aldridge says Rodgers' sacking does not suggest a long-term plan is in place at Anfield and is worried about the short-term effects of changing the manager outside of the transfer window.

He said: "Long-term, if you've got a plan, it doesn't fit the bill to sack him. When the new manager comes in he won't want some of the players - he's got his own strategy and his own system.

"He'll have to persist with what he's got until January and see who fits his system and then he might want to jiggle it around and may want more investment. Whoever they bring in will put his plans to Fenway and say what he needs. If we've got the money, then okay."
