Carlo Ancelotti has denied claims he was offered the Liverpool job insisting he had no direct contact with the club.

The Italian, who had previously claimed he wants to return to managing in England, was linked with the Reds job after Brendan Rodgers was sacked earlier this month.

Sky sources understand that Ancelotti's representatives, along with first choice Jurgen Klopp, were contacted following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, while Harry Redknapp had claimed Ancelotti turned down the Anfield role.

Speaking on the speculation for the first time, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea coach insists he had no direct discussions with the Merseyside club about the position.

"With Liverpool, there was no contact," Ancelotti told website Goal.com.

"When a job becomes available, they always use the names of the coaches currently without a team, so, my name was thrown out there.

The 56-year-old has also been linked with the Italy job as coach Antonio Conte's contract expires after Euro 2016 but the former Paris St-Germain boss says international football does not appeal to him.

"For now, there's a desire to continue coaching a club because I'm still motivated by being on the pitch every day," he added

"Coaching national teams is more restrictive as there's not the time to coach on a daily basis, which is what I enjoy."
