James Milner believes Sunday’s mauling of Aston Villa could be the catalyst for a late European push from Liverpool.

The England midfielder was among the scorers as Liverpool hit six past rock-bottom Villa to move up to eighth in the Premier League table and just three points off fifth place.

The match saw the return to action of fit-again Daniel Sturridge - who marked his first league start since October with the opening goal - and Milner believes his side will now build on the result.

"Hopefully that can kickstart this final period of the season with some important games coming up, get the boys some confidence in front of goal and hopefully a lot more chances will go in," he said.

"It looks a lot better when you look at the league table and see that. It's important and hopefully we can build on the confidence from the chances we've created and taken.

"We have been creating chances, but not putting them in the back of the net. If we can keep getting goals from everywhere, contributing and taking a bit of pressure off the front boys then that'll help as well.

"I spoke with Jordan Henderson the other day and said I think we're due a game like this where things go in."

Liverpool will look to continue their form in their next game away to FC Augsburg in the Europa League on Thursday.
