Jurgen Klopp in upbeat mood after Liverpool's penalty defeat by Atletico Madrid

Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool were the only side looking to play football in their Audi Cup final defeat by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Liverpool lost 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena, having beaten Bayern Munich 3-0 in impressive fashion on Tuesday evening.

The German said it was attack versus defence in Bavaria against the La Liga side, but bemoaned his side for switching off for Keidi Bare's opening goal, before Roberto Firmino equalised from the spot late on.

"Atletico wanted to win the cup," he said after the defeat. "We did also, but we also wanted to play football, Atletico only wanted to win the cup.

"You could not have a more difficult job against a team like Atletico. They get results and results and results. It was offence against defence. It doesn't make life easy.

"We weren't concentrating for the goal. Second half we did better. We played more football. We deserved the equaliser. One lost challenge on a header shouldn't mean you go behind.

"It was a completely different job to do from the Bayern game. Atletico left the game to us and said 'come on'."

Liverpool are as yet unbeaten in normal time in pre-season so far, and finish off against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Saturday before their Premier League clash against Watford on August 12.

"I'm happy with where we're at. We had a lot of sessions to do. We will get the benefits of it during the season," said Klopp.

Commenting on Neymar's impending world-record move from Barcelona to PSG, Klopp said: "I thought FFP was made so things like that couldn't happen. I don't know how that happens."
