Mundo Deportivo says that Real Madrid were prepared to fork out as much as £177m to try and sign Coutinho ahead of their La Liga rivals.
In the end, Coutinho joined Barcelona in a deal worth £146m.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig are set to turn down Liverpool's proposal for midfielder Naby Keita to move to Anfield in the January transfer window, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The player will instead joins the Reds this summer, as originally planned.
