Andy Robertson is enjoying a spell of 'exceptional' form at Liverpool, says Ryan Mason

Andy Robertson always had the potential to succeed and is enjoying a period of "exceptional" form for Liverpool, says former Hull team-mate Ryan Mason.

The Scotland international first arrived in English football in July 2014, after a stellar debut campaign as a professional with Dundee United attracted the attentions of then-Premier League side Hull.

Robertson quickly established himself as a regular in Hull under Steve Bruce and, despite being unable to prevent the Tigers from relegation last season, earned a move to Anfield in a £10m deal.

Mason insists the 24-year-old was always a standout performer during his spell at the KCOM Stadium and has taken his opportunity to impress under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Queen's Park to Champions League final

Robertson arrived at Dundee United from amateur side Queen's Park in 2013 and five years later will face Real Madrid in the Champions League showpiece.

"I see the potential. He excelled and stood out in a team that were in a relegation battle last year," Mason told Sky Sports News.

"To do that as a defender is very difficult. He has gone to Liverpool, had to wait for his opportunities and taken his time.

"Klopp seems to be the kind of manager that has tried to get him used to the training regime and how Liverpool play but he has come and fitted in.
