CHALA SET TO JOIN DELGADO IN SOUTHAMPTON

SOUTHAMPTON are believed to have signed Ecuadorian international midfielder Kleber Chala from El Nacional, whilst a decision on fellow countryman Agustin Delgado is due on Tuesday.

Chala is a 33-year-old attacking midfielder and possibly has been bought to help 'bed in' Delgado (pictured) on the South Coast, although the striker has not endeared himself to The Saints' hierarchy with his decision to ensure that Ecuador qualified for the World Cup.

This they did with a 1-1 draw with Uruguay, a game both Delgado and Chala played in.

According to El Nacional, Chala will travel to England over the weekend to complete the deal and understandably, the player was delighted.

President of El Nacional Guillermo Arguello said: "It is the opportunity of his lifetime to be able to play in such a competitive football league as the English.

"Kleber gave everything he had for the benefit of the club. Now I wish him luck and success."

Arguello did not reveal any details about the transfer and the fee would seem to remain unknown.

Speaking about the move, Chala said: "I do not know anything about the club, I only know that it is well established and that I go there to work. My intention is to prevail my good name and that of Ecuadorian football

"I am thankful to God for this opportunity. I am proud and conscious of the responsibility placed upon me and I must be on my best form.

"El Nacional has been my family for a long time and it is always sad to leave."

He also celebrated the possibility of playing with Delgado, something 'I have done for many years in the national team and in El Nacional'.

El Nacional is Delgado's old side and Chala has played for the club for 11 years, from 1996-98 with his striking countryman. The Ecuadorian coach Hernan Gomez authorised the midfielder to leave the national squad for the final World Cup qualifier with Chile in order to complete the transfer, with the country having already booked their ticket for their first ever finals in Japan/Korea.

Meanwhile, Stoke's Sergei Shtaniuk, who scored the winner on Saturday against former Division Two leaders Brentford, is a target for both Southampton and Crystal Palace according to reports.

Shtaniuk, a Belarussian defender, is rated in the £2 million bracket.

Speculation linking Liverpool with Wayne Bridge has been instantly dismissed by the Anfield outfit.
