Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have agreed to end defender Javier Manquillo's loan spell at Anfield a year early.

Manquillo joined Liverpool on a two-year loan before the 2014-15 season but the 21-year-old was barely used over the second half of the season.

After making a positive impression in his early matches, his only appearances in 2015 came in FA Cup ties against AFC Wimbledon and Bolton and the Europa League defeat at Besiktas.

The arrival of England international right-back Nathaniel Clyne last week made it even less likely that Manquillo would be able to claim a regular place in Brendan Rodgers' first team.

A statement from Atletico Madrid read: "Javier Manquillo will not fulfil his second season on loan with Liverpool.

"The player and Atletico Madrid decided that he would go to Anfield for two seasons to enjoy the necessary minutes to continue growing football-wise.

"However, in this first season with the 'Reds', the defender has not had all the minutes he and our club consider necessary for that purpose of accumulating experience."
