The England forward, who scored just five goals during an injury-hit campaign last season, had a hip operation in April before undergoing rehabilitation under the medical staff of American baseball giants Boston Red Sox.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will check the player's fitness ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Manchester United but the match is likely to come too early for the 25-year-old.

Sturridge enjoyed a prodigious campaign at Anfield during 2013/14 when he scored 24 times as Liverpool just missed out on winning the league title for the first time since 1990.

He made only 18 appearances last season due to thigh, calf and hip problems but returned to Melwood from the States three weeks ago to complete his recovery from injury.

Rodgers is also likely to be without the services of Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana for this weekend's game at Old Trafford.
