David Seaman says Arsene Wenger deserves to know if the club want him to stay at Arsenal next season

David Seaman has urged his former club Arsenal to clarify the position of manager Arsene Wenger’s contract in order to quell fans’ unrest.

Wenger's current contract expires at the end of the season but there has been no confirmation as to whether he will sign an extension.

Seaman, who won two Premier League and three FA Cup titles under Wenger, says the club should speak earlier rather than later.

The 53-year-old told Sky Sports News HQ: "He does deserve respect but I think the most important thing is that the club come out and say what's going to happen.

"Is he going to stay to the end of the season or is he going to sign a new contract? I think it's the not knowing that's causing a lot of unrest.

"The longer it gets left, the more unrest builds. For me, Arsene does not deserve the sort of treatment that he's getting at the moment - it's totally unjust.

"He's a great guy, he's a gentleman and he's been brilliant for Arsenal but we'll have to wait and see what happens."

Wenger reportedly turned down a lucrative £30 million a year offer from China last month, which eclipsed Arsenal's two-year contract extension.

Despite this, Wenger says he is fully focused on Arsenal's season and is not looking for other jobs.

Speaking at the press conference on Thursday, Wenger said: "I've been here 20 years and many times had opportunity to leave. I don't have to convince you my preference has always been Arsenal.

"But I am objective and lucid enough to make the right decision for myself and the club itself. The club is free to make the decision if it wants and I will respect that. Competent managers always try to get better, to reinvent themselves."
