Paul Merson launched into a passionate rant about former club Arsenal on Thursday's The Debate show.

The Gunners won their opening game of the season 4-3 against Leicester, but looked vulnerable defensively, before losing 1-0 at Stoke on Saturday to create more question marks over their capabilities at the back.

Speaking on The Debate, Merson said Arsenal can't afford to lose on Super Sunday against Liverpool at Anfield, live on Sky Sports Premier League from 3.30pm, and questioned why Arsene Wenger has not focused on improving the defence having played a back three for their first two games.

Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

Merson said: "It's been like that for the last 10 years, you know that, I know that, so how does [Wenger] not know that?

"How are you every going to win the Premier League with Nacho Monreal playing in a back three? Please tell me?

"Look at the goal against Stoke, I could see what was going to happen. This is Arsenal Football Club, you can't be playing Bellerin, a right back playing left back, and Monreal playing in a three. What is it? It has to stop! It can't keep going on like this.

"Arsenal have got players going forward in abundance, but you've got to be strong at the back!"
