Alexis Sanchez has been included in Arsenal’s squad for this season’s Europa League campaign.

The Chilean, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been named in the 42-man pool after missing out on a Deadline Day move to Manchester City.

City had a £60m bid for Sanchez accepted on the final day of the transfer window but the deal collapsed when Arsenal were unable to sign Monaco's Thomas Lemar as a replacement.

He is included alongside midfielder Jack Wilshere and a number of youngsters including Joseph Willock and Krystian Bielik.

Sky sources understand that Manchester City have not given up on Sanchez and will try to sign him again when the window re-opens in January.

If such a move does materialise the 28-year-old would be eligible to play for City in the Champions League, if they remain in the competition, as Champions League squads can be updated again before the start of February.

Article 44 of UEFA regulations state: "For all matches from the start of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition.

"Such registration must be completed by 1 February 2018 at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

"One player from the above quota of three who has been fielded in a UEFA club competition group stage match for another club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded: a. in the same competition for another club; or b. for another club that is currently in the same competition."

Earlier this week Zlatan Ibrahimovic was included in Manchester United's squad for the Champions League group stage but Diego Costa was not named in Chelsea's pool for the Champions League.
