Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says he will not change his aggressive approach to the game, despite the resulting injury problems.

The England star, 23, missed large sections of the last few seasons due to injuries - most recently undergoing ankle surgery which sidelined him for much of the 2014/2015 campaign.

But despite calls for Wilshere to start 'riding' challenges more effectively and be more conservative in the tackle, the Gunners playmaker insists he is incapable of playing the game any other way.

He said: "When I was injured I read a few people who said that. I thought maybe they are right, maybe I should change it a little bit.

Your best dribblers in the world your Messis and your Iniestas, they keep the ball very close to them so maybe that’s something I can work on but I definitely won’t be changing my game.

"As soon as I came back on my first game naturally I wanted to pick up the ball up and run with it, I can’t change that. I can work on a few things maybe.

"You look at your best dribblers in the world - Messi, Iniesta - they keep the ball very close to them so maybe that’s something I can work on but I definitely won’t be changing my game."

Roy Hodgson's England take on Slovenia on Sunday looking to continue their perfect Euro 2016 Group E qualifying campaign and Wilshere took some positives from last weekend's goalless friendly against the Republic of Ireland.

He said of the trip to Ljubjana: "We are not going into the game thinking we want a draw. But at the same time we don’t want to lose a game.

"We want to keep that unbeaten run going. We feel we have enough quality to go over there and win the game. We kept a clean sheet on Sunday, it wasn’t the best performance but we did keep a clean sheet. If we can do that on Sunday, I think we can win the game.

"The manager and coaching staff have done really well with that. We had a few days off at the beginning of the week which we needed to get back to our families.

"We trained last night and again today and I thought we only trained for an hour and 10 minutes but the level and intensity were good. We are feeling good going into the weekend."

Speaking ahead of England's European Qualifier against Slovenia, Wilshere described Wayne Rooney as 'world class'

Wilshere insisted he enjoyed playing at the base of England's midfield having started that role against Switzerland after the World Cup last year and added that skipper Wayne Rooney had helped him progress.

"I've really enjoyed playing in that position," he added. "I was nervous because it's a big position but after that game I've come a long way.

"Since playing in this position I've realised Wayne Rooney's world class and not many strikers have his brain. He makes great runs and makes it easy for me in that position."
