Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been ruled out of England's European Qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.

The 23-year-old has not played yet this season because of an ankle injury and had initially been ruled out for two months.

Although he has returned to training, Arsene Wenger has confirmed the two matches on September 5 and 8 will come too soon for Wilshere.

That's a blow to national manager Roy Hodgson - albeit an unexpected one - after Wilshere scored twice in England's last game, a 3-2 win over Slovenia in Ljubljana on June 14.

Wenger said: "I would believe that is a bit too optimistic to think he would be available for England. It's too early.
