Dynamo Kiev forward Andriy Yarmelenko claims he would rather play for Everton than Barcelona - and his comments have pleased Roberto Martinez.

Everton made an attempt to sign the 26-year-old last summer and agreed a fee with the Ukrainian club, but they could not agree terms with the player.

Everton reportedly remain interested in the player and Yarmolenko has admitted he would be much more interested in a move to Everton rather than "taking selfies with Lionel Messi".

Yarmolenko said: "Of course you can go to Barcelona, take a cool selfie with Lionel Messi, put the images on Instagram and get a million likes and be pleased with yourself," he told Ukrainian media on Thursday.

"But I'm not one of those. It is better to play at Everton."

Everton manager Martinez was asked about Yarmolenko's comments in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Toffees' clash with Stoke on Saturday.

"We all know Yarmolenko is one of the best footballers of his generation in his country. He's a captain and a leader and he has his own ambitions.

"That sort of comment from him is pleasing for everyone at Everton, but we don't talk about a player who is not registered with us."
