New boss Ronald Koeman's main priority for the summer may be to hold on to key talents such as John Stones, Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku, while much of their transfer business will depend on who stays or departs from Goodison Park.
A new centre-back will be required if Stones moves to Manchester City, and Everton also need to strengthen in central midfield. Koeman might seek to bolster his attack regardless of whether Lukaku stays, and he has already signed Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg as a replacement for Tim Howard.
Sebastien Haller struck 19 goals in the Eredivisie for FC Utrecht last season and, at 22, could potentially be a replacement for Lukaku. Everton are eager to sign Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, and they have also been linked with Manchester United's Juan Mata.
Axel Witsel could also arrive from Zenit St Petersburg after enjoying a solid Euro 2016 with Belgium, while Tim Krul has been targeted as a possible No 1 following Newcastle's relegation.
"Lukaku is a key player, a goalscorer and you don't want to lose one of your best players," said Koeman. "He's a young player who needs support and to improve. We like to keep that type of player."
"They've had the new manager coming in with Ronald Koeman and there's talk of Juan Mata going there. They underachieved last season and I think a lot could depend on the players they keep, to who they then bring in.
"There's been talk of John Stones and Romelu Lukaku maybe leaving, but they have a really good squad there that should have done a lot better last season so I think Koeman will be confident that he can have a far better season with the players that he's got there than what had happened previously under Roberto Martinez.
"I don't think he would need to bring in too many others because they already have a good squad, obviously unless Lukaku leaves."
