Ronald Koeman says it is about time Everton got one over their rivals Liverpool on Monday, live on Sky Sports 1.

The clubs meet for the 227th time on Mersey Monday with the red half of the city leading the head-to-head 89-66.

But it is a fixture that has been dominated by Liverpool in recent years with Everton's last win over their cross-Stanley Park rivals coming more than six years ago.

Since then, Everton have taken on Liverpool 12 times and failed to claim a win, although the last four Goodison Park encounters have ended in stalemate and they come in to the game on the back of a fine 2-1 home win over Arsenal.

"The derby is all about the fans, we understand that but we need to be calm and prepare the game in the way we like," Koeman said.

"We need to accept how difficult it is, win the game and make the fans happy.

"It's an easy motivation for the players, everybody is talking about it.

"It's about preparing the team. You have an emotional part that you need to control. That's the most important.

"The positive side is that we keep our belief until the end of the [Arsenal] game. That is part of the character of the players. We had a good support from the fans and it makes it difficult for teams to play at Goodison Park."
