Tony Pulis praises the effort of his side as West Brom beat Sunderland 2-0

Tony Pulis does not expect his West Brom side to catch Everton in the Premier League table despite being just one place behind them.

West Brom's 2-0 victory over Sunderland ensures they remain eighth in the table, four points behind Ronald Koeman's Everton.

And while five points still separate Everton from the top six, the gap was cut after Manchester United could only draw away at Stoke.

When asked if West Brom were aiming to finish "best of the best" below the top six, Pulis quickly replied: "Seven!"

"If you look at what Everton have invested, and what they will do I'm sure - then it looks like Everton will join that group of six," Pulis added.

West Brom 2-0 Sunderland

"So we're pleased at the moment, there's a lot of games to go and we will keep our feet on the ground. The players really put a shift in today."

First-half volleys from Darren Fletcher and Chris Brunt handed West Brom all three points against Sunderland, who suffered their fourth league defeat in five games.

"We played really well first half and deserved to go 2-0 up at half-time, but you have to give credit to Sunderland," Pulis said.

"They could have thrown in the towel but they didn't and had a right go in the second half, making it difficult for us.

"We just had to make no mistakes so I'm very pleased. That was a potential banana skin, because people expected us to win and they can be difficult to handle."

A busy Friday in the transfer window for West Brom saw them club capture Jake Livermore from Hull City, a player Pulis hopes can go on to earn an England recall.

Livermore came off the bench to make his West Brom debut against Sunderland, and Pulis expects him to offer West Brom more energy in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, the transfer saga surrounding Saido Berahino came to its conclusion when Stoke completed an initial £12m deal for the 23-year-old - and Pulis hopes the outgoing striker can rediscover his goalscoring form.

"I wish Saido all the best," Pulis added. "He's joining a very, very good club and he has to concentrate on his football now - wash away all the people and stuff that has been surrounding him for a long time.

"His goalscoring record before this nonsense started was exceptional. A young, England lad, who has represented them [at youth level] so it's a great opportunity for him."
