Wayne Rooney has already started pre-season training after returning from a holiday he intended to use to decide his future.

The 31-year-old is likely to leave Manchester United this summer, Sky sources understand, having found opportunities limited under Jose Mourinho last season.

Rooney said he had "more or less" decided his future following the end of the 2016/17 campaign in May, but added he would take a few weeks to finalise his plans.

The forward is now back in the UK and already getting into shape for the new campaign, despite United not heading on their pre-season tour until July 9.

Rooney is eager to play first-team football, with the United and England club captain having been dropped from the latest Three Lions squad by Gareth Southgate, and has offers from both the Premier League and abroad.

The transfer window in China opened on Monday, although a 100 per cent tax on transfer fees for loss-making clubs could make a deal prohibitively expensive.

Rooney still has a season left on his contract with United, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further season.
