Bolton Wanderers have confirmed their players are yet to be paid for November due to a 'short-term funding issue.'

Advisor Trevor Birch said the issue was down to the ongoing situation regarding the ownership of the Sky Bet Championship's bottom side.

Birch said: "This is due to a short-term funding issue. We are working hard behind the scenes and hope to have this resolved in a quick and timely manner and  I will be meeting the players tomorrow to update them."

Birch, who was involved in takeovers at Chelsea and Leeds among others, has been brought into the Macron Stadium to find a buyer for the club, with local boxing favourite Amir Khan and former Wanderers striker Dean Holdsworth among those linked with consortium-led takeover bids.

Bolton announced earlier this year they were dealing with a debt of £172.9m and were seeking investment, and Birch will negotiate any deal for owner Eddie Davies in the absence of chairman Phil Gartside, who the club revealed to be 'seriously ill' last week.

Sky Sports News HQ understands PFA staff will meet on Tuesday with both the club and the players to see what help they can provide. Those discussions are expected to include meetings with Birch.

Boss Neil Lennon revealed last week he was unable to spend any money on new players until the uncertainty had cleared, when he spoke on the FL72 Podcast.

"At the moment, there's no money available at all," Lennon told Sky Sports. "So a lot will depend on who takes over and what funds they have if we are going to buy any players.

"It's tough times, but it's a great challenge for me as a manager and a person. It's a test of the players' character as well, not only because of the things going on away from football, but we're bottom of the league."
