AZ Alkmaar sporting director dismisses reports Vincent Janssen is close to Tottenham

AZ Alkmaar sporting director Mark Huiberts has dismissed reports that Tottenham are close to signing their striker Vincent Janssen as "nonsense".

Tottenham had a £15m bid rejected for the 21-year-old last week, with Janssen having already held talks with Spurs and visited their training ground after Alkmaar gave permission.

Reports in the British press have claimed a deal for Janssen to join Spurs could be concluded by the end of the week.

But Huiberts told Dutch newspaper Noordhollands Dagblad on Wednesday: "There is a lot of speculation and I read a lot of nonsense stories.

"We once received a bid from Tottenham Hotspur that we have not accepted. That's not so strange to me. It is not often that a club agrees immediately with a first offer.

"Then we heard nothing more".

Janssen has spoken out twice about his frustration at not being allowed to proceed with his "dream" move to White Hart Lane.

Sky sources reported back in May that Spurs were interested in Janssen after Mauricio Pochettino, his assistant Jesus Perez and head of recruitment Paul Mitchell watched him play for the Netherlands against Republic of Ireland.

Wolfsburg have also been interested in the player - who was the Eredivisie's top-scorer last season with 27 goals - and the German club also had a bid equal to Tottenham's rejected.

Paris Saint-Germain have also shown an interest but Sky sources understand that both clubs' interest has cooled.
