Tottenham teenage sensation Marcus Edwards made his first-team debut against Gillingham and went close to a first senior goal

Tottenham attacker Marcus Edwards, who has been compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino, made his first-team debut against Gillingham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Spurs advanced to the fourth round of the competition with a 5-0 win over their Sky Bet League One opponents, thanks to two strikes from Christian Eriksen, a Vincent Janssen penalty and goals by Josh Onomah and Erik Lamela.

Edwards came off the bench with 15 minutes remaining and went close to capping a dream week with his first goal, but Gills 'keeper Jonathan Bond tipped his effort over the bar after a Messi-like run.

"The qualities - it's only looks, his body and the way that he plays - remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi," Pochettino said earlier this week.

"He [Edwards] is a very good prospect and potentially he can be a top player, but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player."
