Eric Dier has admitted his surprise after Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane did not make the 30-man Ballon d'Or shortlist.
The annual award crowns the best player in the world, and the contenders for the 2016 trophy were announced earlier this week by France Football.
It includes a number of Premier League players, including Leicester City's Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez alongside Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Manchester United.
Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Dimitri Payet and fellow Spurs player Hugo Lloris were also selected as nominees, but Kane - who finished as the Premier League's top scorer last season - was not included.
Midfielder Dier has expressed his surprise at the striker's omission, and has backed other team members to make the list in the coming years.
"Leicester won the Premier League but that doesn't mean to say Harry should miss out. He had a fantastic season," the England international told the London Evening Standard.
"To be top scorer in the league after the slow start he had was a brilliant achievement. He could have been on that list, though I am sure he is not too bothered about it.
"We have many players who can be on it in the future, though, if they want to. It is a matter of working hard and trying to improve."
Kane is currently sidelined after picking up an ankle injury although it is hoped he will return soon, having scored twice in five Premier League appearances so far this term.
This year's edition of the prize will be judged solely by a panel of journalists after FIFA and France Football ended their partnership.
Between 2010 and 2015, FIFA's World Player of the Year award had been combined with the Ballon d'Or to create the FIFA Ballon d'Or, which was decided by a combination of votes from national team managers, captains and journalists.
