Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen sustained ankle ligament damage during Saturday's 4-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion.
The Belgium international discovered the full extent of the injury picked up on Tuesday after undergoing a scan, but no time frame has been given over the length of his absence.
Vertonghen fell to the ground in pain after appearing to roll his ankle when lunging for the ball with just over an hour played at White Hart Lane.
He was immediately assisted by Tottenham's medical staff, but was forced to head straight down the tunnel for treatment.
Vertonghen has been wearing a protective boot since sustaining the injury against the Baggies, with manager Mauricio Pochettino describing the injury as "very bad".
Pochettino could shed more light on the injury during his pre-match media conference on Thursday ahead of Saturday's match away at Manchester City.
Tottenham sit in second place in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Chelsea.
