Tony Gale warns Paul Lambert faces tough job at Blackburn Rovers

Paul Lambert thinks Scottish football needs Rangers back in the top division but they have to earn it.

Sky Sports pundit Tony Gale says Paul Lambert will inherit 'a tough job' if he becomes Blackburn Rovers manager.

The Scot is the clear front-runner to replace Gary Bowyer at Ewood Park, with fellow-countryman Alan Irvine rumoured to be his preferred assistant.

Lambert has been out of work for nine months, after being sacked as Aston Villa boss earlier this year.

But speaking on Sky Sports Now Gale questioned whether the former Norwich manager will be able to bring in his own backroom staff.

"It's a tough job," he said. "He is probably nailed on but there are other jobs out there at QPR and Fulham.

"Can Blackburn take all of his staff? A manager like Paul Lambert wants to get it on his own terms. You want your own people around you. You do not want to inherit people."

Blackburn's search for a new manager began when Bowyer was sacked on Tuesday with the club 16th in the Championship, just four points above the bottom three.

Under Bowyer this season, Rovers have drawn half of their 16 league games, winning just three.

Gale, who helped the club win the Premier League title in 1994/95, was disappointed that Bowyer was dismissed after two-and-a-half years in charge.

He said: "I was sad to see Gary go. He could not sign players in the summer. There was a sense even among the fans that they did not want him. They want a bigger name.

"But Gary did a great job. He got them out of turmoil. I think the club were harsh in firing him."

It is unclear whether Blackburn's owners will appoint a permanent manager in time for their trip to Preston on November 21.
