Two days after relegation two key board members have resigned at Aston Villa.

Bernstein, the former chairman of the Football Association, only joined the club's board last month, while the former governor of the Bank of England King was appointed in February.

Sky sources understand Bernstein has left the club because he felt the club were dragging their heels over the appointment of a new manager.

And in his resignation letter, King said: "It is with real sorrow that I am writing to tender my resignation as a director of Aston Villa. I do not take this action lightly. As a supporter for over 55 years, how could I?

"But it is no longer possible to carry out the role that I was asked to perform.

"Progress has stalled. It is clear that a sale of the club to a new owner must be brought about as soon as possible ."

It is also understood the future of Adrian Bevington - brought in by Bernstein three weeks ago to help conduct a review of Villa's season - is uncertain.
